Título: Probing the Extreme Universe with Astrophysical Neutrinos

Palestrante: Dr. Ibrahim Safa da Universidade de Wisconsin - Madison e membro da colaboração IceCube.

Terça 28/07 às 16 horas via Google Meet

Abstract: Two great mysteries arise from looking at the Sky. The first, a bit more than a hundred years old, is the the origins of cosmic-rays, and the second is the nature of dark matter. In this talk, I will discuss how the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a cubic-kilometer ice-cherenkov detector at the geographic South Pole, can shed light on these questions. Cosmic-rays are charged nuclei that can be accelerated to energies exceeding 10^19 eV, and produce a flux of TeV - PeV neutrinos when interacting with radiation or matter near acceleration sites. These could be connected with the recently detected high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux extending to 10 PeV energies. More recently, multi-messenger campaigns have provided several exciting hints pointing towards the origins of astrophysical neutrinos. These neutrinos have the potential to solve the cosmic-ray mystery and allow for new ways to search for dark matter at the highest energies.
